Fincantieri: option exercised for LCS 25

2 April 2016 – Within the Littoral Combat Ship Program (LCS), the US Navy, following the exercise of an option, has awarded the consortium consisting of Fincantieri, through its subsidiary Fincantieri Marinette Marine (FMM), and Lockheed Martin Corporation, a contract for the construction of one fully funded Freedom-class LCS, with delivery scheduled in 2020.

The contract award includes funding for seaframe construction, systems integration and testing. LCS 25 will be the eleventh Freedom-class ship of the program, assigned within the original 2010 plan, on top of the two units delivered before 2010. The other 10 ships delivered or in production are: “Milwaukee” (LCS 5), “Detroit” (LCS 7), “Little Rock” (LCS 9), “Sioux City” (LCS 11), “Wichita” (LCS 13), “Billings” (LCS 15), “Indianapolis” (LCS 17), “St. Louis” (LCS 19), “Minneapolis/St. Paul” (LCS 21), and “Copperstown” (LCS 23). The construction of the LCS Program Freedom-class was awarded to FMM in 2010, within the partnership between Fincantieri and Lockheed Martin, global leader in the defense sector.

The LCS Freedom-class is one of the US Navy’s main shipbuilding programs and relates to a new generation of mid-sized multirole vessels, designed for surveillance activities and coastal defense for deep water operations as well as capabilities for addressing asymmetrical threats such as mines, silent diesel submarines and fast surface ships. 2 LCS Freedom-class vessels have been successfully deployed to the Western Pacific, a third has been delivered and 7 more are under construction.
