the course of four different conducted tours on 8 May 2015, port experts will brief visitors on processes at selected cargo handling terminals in Germany’s largest seaport. “With this range of tours we aim to make the variety of the Port of Hamburg’s services something to be experienced at close quarters. In recent years these have become a firm and most successful feature of the program for HAMBURG PORT BIRTHDAY,” says Axel Mattern, Chairman of Port of Hamburg Marketing’s Executive Board. “Those interested will find full German-language information on the Internet page www.hafen-hamburg.de/hafengeburtstag. For the first time this year, tickets will be sold in cooperation with our partner Hamburg Tourismus.”

Visitors here receive an insight into the processes involved in handling steel boxes, as well as general and project cargoes such as oversize machinery. Vehicles are also loaded at the Buss Multi-Purpose Terminal, where visitors can learn about the logistics involved (Tour 3). Bulk cargoes account for one-third of total Port of Hamburg throughput. Tour 4 provides insights into handling these, as well as the staff training provided by companies in the port. K+S Transport’s Kalikai offers a view of loading, discharge and storage of fertilizers. This tour also provides information on vocational and further training in the port at the ma-co maritime competence centre. Each tour concludes with a visit to the Hamburg Port Museum that offers participants a stroll through Port of Hamburg history. All tours commence with a launch trip from Hohe Brücke/Kajen landing stage and on past Speicherstadt and HafenCity to the landing stage of the Port Museum. Coaches take participants from there on to the port operators, and back again later to the museum, where former port workers provide lively tales about the history of the Port of Hamburg as a workplace. In addition, snacks are available here. This fascinating day ends with a launch or bus transfer back to the Hohe Brücke/Kajen landing stage.
